The Golden Dogs are a Canadian band I fell in love with upon first listen of their 2004 single “Yeah.”
Go ahead, give the video above a click and listen to the song. It’s quite a catchy tune and I’m guessing you’ll end up loving it too. See? I told you you would like it.
I remember hearing the song on the local college radio station where I lived at the time and immediately deciding that I had to have a physical copy of their album, and I clearly remember driving 40 miles over a mountain pass to get to the nearest indie record shop so I could own their record In Three Parts.
I also remember being a bit disappointed by my purchase because at the time I didn’t enjoy the album too much. Now I’m not saying In Three Parts is a bad album. I’m pretty sure it’s a decent record, although I haven’t listened to it in more than six years so I can’t accurately vouch for its quality. When I bought the album I wasn’t paying much attention to the indie music blogosphere so I have no concept of whether the band became popular or whether they’re just one of those bands that fizzled out after one small single. And really whether or not I appreciated the album at the time of purchase didn’t matter much to me because I had “Yeah” in my music collection.
Typically when I write band crushes I like to know as much about the band as possible in order to convey as much information but The Golden Dogs are a band I really don’t feel the need to know much about. I like “Yeah” so much that I don’t want to ruin my perception of the group by going all analytical and bloggery, so I just want to enjoy the song and revel in my lack of knowledge. Hell, I’m sure the Golden Dogs have released quite a few albums since 2004 and I’m guessing they probably released a few prior to that too but I don’t care. For now I’m happy with being the guy who likes a band for one song.
So imagine my surprise yesterday when I got a press release from the band’s publicist announcing plans for a Golden Dogs tour and a new album, titled Coat of Arms, set to be released stateside April 26 (lucky Canadians can already purchase the record in their homeland). You can stream the record now over at the band’s website.
Like In Three Parts I’m sure the album is a good listen and I’m guessing I’ll get around to spending some time with the record, but really all I care about right now is that the band is touring with State Radio and will be at Showbox at the Market March 23 because I can’t wait to see them live. Or, to be more accurate I can’t wait to hear “Yeah” performed live so I can smile and sway (because that’s how I roll) throughout its catchy riffs and shout-along, one-word chorus.
