If it seemed like 2010 was the year of Shawn Smith you may be right.
The soulful Smith was all over the place playing shows with the reformed Brad at the High Dive, Showbox and Sasquatch!, fronting a reunited Mother Love Bone, releasing albums with Brad and his other band Satchel and making impressions on thousands at the Hootenanny for Haiti and the Hootenanny for a Healthy Gulf. Yes indeed, Shawn Smith definitely had himself a big 2010.
Smith’s vocal versatility allows him to go from gentle and soulful (Brad) to funky (Pigeonhed) to all-out rock (Satchel) making him one of the most distinct voices in a city filled with unique voices. If you’ve ever seen his cover of “Purple Rain” or heard him sing “Crown of Thorns” you don’t need to be convinced of the power of his pipes.
Last year Satchel released Heartbreak & Honey, which was the bands first full-length record in 14 years, and played a few shows around town but there wasn’t much fanfare behind the record which is a shame because it’s really quite good. Saturday Satchel will continue its flurry of activity to support Heartbreak & Honey with a show at the High Dive ($8, 9:30 p.m.) and Guerrilla Candy has a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky reader.
All you have to do to enter to win is send us an email with the subject “Satchel” and your name in the body. A winner will be chosen at random and notified Friday afternoon. Good luck.
