Watch: Fly Moon Royalty take on ‘Baby Got Back’

Last weekend the Seattle Center and EMP Museum hosted The Next Fifty Play the First Fifty. At the event a crop of locals musicians covered songs by locals who performed at the Seattle Center throughout the past 50 years in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1962 World’s Fair.

The show featured lots of Guerrilla Candy favorites including Seacats, Brothers From Another and Vendetta Red (check out their scorching “Rusty Cage” cover). Also on the bill was Fly Moon Royalty and for their cover the duo of Action Jackson and Adra Boo chose to take on Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back.”

I’m typically a purist when it comes to covers of local legends, but I really like what Fly Moon did with the 1992 classic. The slowed down Action Jackson groove takes the song in a new direction and Audra’s singing/rapping vocals combined with her sultry spin on the hook really help FMR make the song their own while keeping it ever so slightly similar to the original. Everything about their take on Mix’s signature song just works. Give it a listen for yourself above.
