The Society of Professional Journalists recently honored Guerrilla Candy Editor and Publisher Travis Hay by naming Guerrilla Candy one of the best specialized websites in a five-state region.

The award was announced during a banquet for the Excellence in Journalism Awards which was held May 18 at the Renaissance Hotel. The annual contest honors the best in journalism in SPJ’s Region 10 which covers Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Overall the contest received more than 1,900 entries from more than 260 news outlets and journalists representing daily and non-daily newspapers, alt-weeklies, newsweeklies, magazines, TV stations, radio stations and online media outlets. Those entries were submitted to judges across in Cincinnati, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, Kansas City and Missouri who chose the finalists in nearly 185 categories.

Other winners in the specialized website category include MSN’s The Heartbeat Blog and Oregon Public Broadcasting’s EathFix: News fixed on the environment.

This is the fourth time Hay has been honored by SPJ for his music journalism. He was awarded trophies in 2008 and 2009 for his work with Ear Candy in the best specialized blog and best online arts & entertainment categories and he was awarded a best new website trophy for Guerrilla Candy in 2010 when Ear Candy had to be shut down and re-branded for legal reasons.
