‘BOOM: A Film About the Sonics’ to premiere at MoPOP with a Q&A and concert

The Sonics are a vital part of the cultural history of the Pacific Northwest and a documentary film set for wide release this year is set to showcase the band’s importance.

The influential proto-grunge garage rockers are the focus of “BOOM: A Film About The Sonics.” The film has made its rounds on the film festival circuit for the last five years but has yet to receive wide distribution. That will change next month when the movie has a premiere at MoPOP on Sept. 7.

The movie features all the original member of the band and it tells the story of the band’s beginnings and its heyday in the 1960s. It includes local icons such as Mike McCready, Mark Arm, Nancy Wilson, Kim Thayil, Chris Ballew and others discussing the impact the group has had on their careers.

Along with the screening at MoPop, which will also include a live Q&A with Ballew moderating, there will be a concert after the film on Sept. 7. The concert will take place at MoPOP’s Sky Church and will feature The Sonics headlining with Girl Trouble supporting and a DJ set by Marco Collins. Tickets for the concert are currently on sale.
