Watch Metallica cover Mudhoney in Seattle

Leave it to Metallica to make what is usually the most boring part of their set the most memorable part of a weekend filled with two epic stadium concerts.

The band was in town for its “No Repeat Weekend” tour during which they play two shows in a city with no songs repeated on the setlists for each show. During each show there is a part typically called “Kirk and Rob Doodle” which is when bassist Rob Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammet jam on a composition they wrote prior to the show.

Friday night’s doodle was a mostly forgettable jam called “Orca Attack.” On Sunday night Trujillo introduced that night’s doodle as a tribute to Seattle musicians. He then ripped into the riff for The Sonics‘ “The Witch.” The tribute to one of Tacoma’s finest was nice and unexpected, but what was really unexpected was what followed.

After the song, Hammet and Trujillo broke into the iconic, unmistakable riff of “Touch Me, I’m Sick.” The sloppy cover, which likely was not rehearsed much, was servicable but let’s just say Mark Arm and the rest of Mudhoney have the market cornered on that song.
