No, you haven’t mistakenly clicked on a sports blog, there’s Seattle music news to be found here.
The Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres announced today that the team their “natural rivarly” will now be known as The Vedder Cup. And you guessed it, the cup is named after Eddie Vedder.
The Vedder Cup began as a joke by a San Diego sports blogger who noted the only thing the Mariners and Padres had in common that would create a rivalry is that Eddie Vedder once lived in San Diego. The interleague matchup between both teams has been jokingly referred to as The Vedder Cup ever since, but it has never been officially recognized by either team until today’s annoucement.
The two teams are scheduled to play six games against one another this season. If each team wins three games the winner of The Vedder Cup is determined by run differential. If that stat is a tie then the team with the batter who had the hardest exist velocity, or EV, wins. The winner of the series will get a custom trophy, which will include a guitar in some fashion, created by Eddie Vedder.
As part of The Vedder Cup, both teams will make charitable donations to Jill and Eddie Vedder’s EB Research Partnership.
The Mariners take on the Padres in San Diego May 16-18 and the Padres come to town to play at T-Mobile Park Aug. 25-27. Here are some more details on events planned during The Vedder Cup.
